A Tech-Laden Interior That Punches Above Its Weight

Starting at its exterior, the Audi A1 is clearly a high-end performance car the second you lay your eyes on it.

With its sharp lines, wide track, and short overhangs, the A1 has a confident and sporty stance that we really like.

For instance, here it's large, single-frame grille just dominates the front, giving you a car with a very bold and assertive presence on the road as a result.

Here you also get some very stylish LED headlights and taillights, which come as standard across the range, that not only give you excellent visibility but also add to the car's high-tech aesthetic as well, really nicely, we feel.

The A1 is also available in a range of stylish colours, and with the option of a contrasting roofline, allowing you to be able to truly personalise your A1 to match your style, which is a nice touch.

For instance, the face of the A1 is just dominated by a wide, low-slung single-frame grille, which is a design cue taken directly from the legendary Audi Sport Quattro rally car of the 1980s, we may add.

Due to this, this gives the car an incredibly purposeful and planted stance, which is then flanked well by the grille, which is distinctive, and some full-LED headlights that are standard across the range too.

Here, their sharp, angular design provides you with a focused and determined expression, while the three flat slits just below the bonnet edge serve as another subtle nod to the Sport quattro's iconic design as well.

Then, from the side, the A1’s dynamic character continues.

For instance, here you get a strong, crisp shoulder line that runs the length of the car, and visually connects your headlights to the rear lamps and giving the body a taut, muscular appearance as a result.

The wide, flat C-pillar then leans forward, creating a sense of forward motion even when the car is stationary, and one of the most desirable features is the optional contrasting roof - which stretches from the A-pillar to the roof spoiler - allowing for a fantastic level of personalisation here that just makes the A1's silhouette truly pop we thought.

The rear design is then clean, powerful, and unmistakably Audi.

For instance, the striking 3D-effect LED tail lights feature a very dynamic, geometric graphic that creates a unique light signature, especially with the dynamic indicators that come as standard as well.

The car's width is also accentuated really well by the sculpted rear bumper and a low-set diffuser element as well, which work well together in our opinion to give the A1 a very confident posture on the road.

Overall, in our view, it's just a design that leaves a lasting impression.

The wheels you choose here can also dramatically alter the personality of your A1, and Audi provides a superb range of options to help you here.

For instance, your journey will begin with some stylish 15-inch alloys on the entry-level Technik models, then move up to 16-inch '10-spoke turbine' design alloys on the Sport trim.

However, for those who want a more aggressive aesthetic, the S line models feature some really nice 17-inch alloys and lowered sports suspension as standard as well.

Then topping the range, the Black Edition gives you some very impressive 18-inch, 7-spoke rotor-design alloy wheels, in a striking gloss anthracite black finish as well, which perfectly fill the pronounced wheel arches.

Personalisation is also key to the A1's appeal, and the paint palette on offer really has something for everyone.

For instance, you can get the standard solid finishes, which include a crisp Shell White.

Then, for a deeper lustre, there is a wide array of metallic and pearl-effect paints available to you as well.

Here, for instance, popular choices include the very appealing Mythos Black and Glacier White metallics, the modern Arrow Grey pearl effect, and the bold Progressive Red as well.

Then, for those wanting to stand out, you can also get some vibrant options like Turbo Blue and the new District Green, which are available as well.

Then, to help you complete the look, the contrasting roof can be specified in either Mythos Black or Manhattan Grey as well, providing you with a stunning two-tone finish here.

A Tech-Laden Interior That Punches Above Its Weight

Then, when you step inside the A1, you're greeted by a cabin that is both stylish and technologically advanced as well.

Here, for instance, you have a very driver-focused cockpit, which in our view is a highlight, as all controls are just logically laid out and within easy reach here.

The quality of the materials is also excellent, which we like, with a pleasing mix of soft-touch plastics and premium finishes that you'd expect from an Audi.

Audi A1 Sportback Interior

For instance, at the heart of the driver's environment is the Audi Virtual Cockpit, which comes as standard across the entire A1 range.

This stunning 10.25-inch high-resolution digital display then replaces your traditional analogue dials, while also offering you crisp, clear graphics for speed, revs, and essential vehicle information.

Then, on its higher trim levels, this can be upgraded further to the Virtual Cockpit Plus, which allows for even greater customisation, including a full-screen 3D navigation map that places your route directly in your line of sight.

The dashboard itself is also a masterclass in design, with high-quality materials and a lot of tactile switchgear that just feels built to last in our view.

Central to the A1's dashboard is the impressive MMI infotainment system.

For instance, even entry-level models here feature a vibrant 8.8-inch touchscreen, which grows to a magnificent 10.1-inch display on higher specifications as well.

The system here we also found it to be incredibly responsive and user-friendly, with a clear menu structure which has clearly been inspired by modern smartphones, so you should get to grips with it very easily.

Crucially, though, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard, giving you a very easy integration of your device for navigation, music streaming, and communication here.

This is all while you can also get optional upgrades as well, including a fantastic SONOS 3D Premium Sound System, which really does turn your A1 into a concert hall on wheels here.

The A1 also gives you exceptional comfort for both the driver and front passenger alike.

For instance, the standard seats are expertly shaped and provide you with excellent support for both your daily commutes and long-distance journeys alike, with a wide range of adjustments to help you find your perfect driving position too.

Then, for those opting for the S line models, front Sport seats are included here.

These then feature more prominent side bolsters for improved lateral support when you fancy some more spirited driving, along with premium upholstery options like a Pulse cloth and leatherette combination with contrast stitching too.

Then, thanks to its five-door Sportback design, access to the rear of the A1 is easy and convenient as well.

The rear bench is then sculpted to comfortably accommodate two adults on most journeys, reasonably well too, with good headroom and reasonable legroom for a car in the compact class as well.

For families, two ISOFIX child seat mounting points are also fitted to the outer rear seats, which are also complete with top tether attachments for maximum safety here.

This is all while three can fit easily for shorter trips, but the space back here is ideally suited for two, making it far more practical than many of its direct rivals, we should note.

Overall, cabin comfort is another standout feature we must say.

For instance, the A1 is remarkably refined on the move, with some impressive insulation from road and wind noise, which in turn gives it the serene feel of a much larger vehicle, particularly at motorway speeds.

All models then also feature some very efficient air conditioning to help you maintain the perfect cabin temperature as well, with the option of upgrading to a dual-zone automatic climate control system if you so prefer too.

This then allows you, the driver, and your front passenger to set individual temperature preferences for a truly personalised environment up front.

Practicality has also been intelligently woven into the A1's design, we must note here.

For instance, you'll find a host of useful storage solutions throughout the cabin to help keep it tidy.

Here, these range from the front door bins, which are generously sized and can comfortably hold a 1-litre water bottle.

Then in the centre console, you'll also find two cupholders and a convenient tray ahead of the gear selector, which is perfect for your phone.

This is all while you also get a reasonably sized glovebox and an available front centre armrest with an integrated storage compartment, completing the impressive array of cubbies as well.

The Audi A1 also gives you one of the most practical and spacious boots in the premium compact class.

With the rear seats in place, for instance, it offers you a generous 335 litres of luggage capacity – more than enough for a large weekly shop or luggage for a weekend away.

Then for those moments when you need to transport larger items, the rear seats fold down in a 60:40 split, expanding the total load space to an impressive 1,090 litres.

This is all while you can get an adjustable boot floor, which is also available, which can then be raised to create a flat loading area and to also be used to hide your valuable items out of sight as well, if they need to be kept in your car.

Engine Performance

While a fully electric Audi A1 isn't available just yet, the range focuses on highly efficient petrol and diesel engines, with some models incorporating mild-hybrid technology for recuperating energy, for instance.

For instance, here the line-up starts with the 25 TFSI, a 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine that is perfect for city driving, we must admit. The 30 TFSI then offers you a bit more punch, while the 35 TFSI, with its 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, provides you with some very quick acceleration and effortless overtaking.

Then, for those seeking that hot-hatch performance, the 40 TFSI, with its 2.0-litre engine, just delivers you a very exhilarating driving experience overall here.

The A1's handling is also very agile and composed, making it a joy to drive on winding country roads, especially.

The steering is also very precise and well-weighted, and the car just feels planted and secure through the corners.

While the ride can be firm on models with larger alloy wheels and sports suspension, it does remain comfortable and refined for the most part.

However, on the motorway, the A1 just feels like a much larger car, with excellent stability and minimal road and wind noise here.

Then, to complement its agile handling, you also get a very responsive braking system.

For instance, here the brakes provide you with strong and confident stopping power, whilst also feeling progressive and easy to manage in both city traffic and during your more spirited drives as well.

Furthermore, the S line models even offer you the option for some eye-catching red brake callipers to help you stand out more from other cars as well.

Audi also launched their TDI® diesel engines back in 1989 and has been improving them ever since.

For instance, they now feature common-rail technology, which uses special injectors to precisely control the fuel flow.

This then makes the engine quieter and allows it to run at a lower temperature as a result, which helps to cut down on your emissions as a result.

The S Tronic® dual-clutch gearbox is then always one step ahead as well, as it works like two gearboxes in one, with one handling the odd-numbered gears and the other the even ones.

So, when you're in second gear, it's already got third ready to go.

When you change up, it's already preparing fourth, for instance, as well.

This then means you get incredibly fast and smooth gear changes without any loss of power, all while the S tronic® is available on their 1.4 TFSI models.

Audi is always looking for ways to be more efficient – using less fuel, producing less CO2, and wasting less energy.

That's why the Audi A1 is packed with clever, efficient technology here including its TDI® and FSI® engines, its Automatic Start-Stop function, Audi cylinder-on-demand, and its braking recuperation technology.

For instance, the A1's engine features the same advanced fuel-injection technology that has led to their many wins at Le Mans.

With both TDI® and FSI®, fuel is injected directly into the engine at the perfect moment, which reduces waste and makes sure you get the most out of every drop of fuel.

Then, when you're stuck in traffic, your car is still burning fuel and creating CO2, even when you're not moving.

This is where Audi's clever Start-Stop function solves this by switching the engine off when the car is stationary.

For instance, here, the moment you press the clutch, the engine starts up again.

So, by only running the engine when you need it, you then save fuel and lower your emissions by default, which is especially handy when you are in town and city traffic.

The 1.4 TFSI (140PS) engine also proves that you don't have to sacrifice performance for fuel efficiency.

Here, for instance, it uses a clever cylinder-on-demand technology that automatically shuts down two of the four cylinders when you don't need the extra power, like when you're cruising on the motorway or in traffic.

This then gives you the fuel economy and low emissions you'd expect from a diesel, but when you need it, the full power of the TFSI® engine is instantly available to you as well.

When you then brake, the energy is usually lost as heat.

Here, the recuperation system in the Audi A1 cleverly captures this wasted energy.

Then, as you slow down or coast, the system converts this kinetic energy into electrical energy and stores it in the battery directly on the hybrid models.

This stored energy is then used to help power your car when you accelerate, which can save you up to 3% in fuel - which is just awesome.

Practicality for Everyday Life

Despite its compact dimensions, the Audi A1 is a very surprisingly practical car.

Here, for instance, the five-door Sportback configuration just makes it easy to get in and out of the rear seats, and there's enough space for two adults to travel in comfort on shorter journeys as well.

This is all while the boot offers you a generous 335 litres of space with the rear seats in place, which is more than enough for the weekly shop or a weekend getaway, we should note.

Then, when you fold the seats down, the load capacity expands to a very large 1,090 litres, giving you more than enough space for tip runs or loading up a lot of camping gear for a weekend away, for instance.

Audi A1 Sportback Steering Wheel

Five Door

It's important to note, though, that the current generation A1 is available exclusively in the five-door Sportback configuration.

While previous models were available as a sportier three-door car, Audi has focused on maximising practicality with the latest version here by giving you more doors to make getting in and out of it much easier.

A Trim for Every Taste

The Audi A1 is available in a variety of trim levels, each with its own unique character.

Audi A1 Ownership Costs & Reliability

As a premium supermini, the Audi A1's ownership experience really does combine the potential for low running costs with the higher purchase and maintenance expenses expected of the brand.

For instance, here are some of your ongoing costs that you can expect:

Running Costs & Tax

Its economic engines, covered above, really are a key strength.

For instance, here its 1.6 TDI diesel is a standout for efficiency, with low CO₂ emissions and excellent MPG figures, officially achieving over 70 miles per gallon.

The 1.4 TFSI petrol engines with Cylinder on Demand technology also offer a great balance of power and economy.

Overall, this efficiency then translates into a lower Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) rate, making certain models an attractive choice for company car tax.

Purchase, Finance & Resale Value

The list price of the A1 was higher than mainstream rivals like the Ford Fiesta for instance, but, then if you are looking for an A1, you probably are not in the market for a Fiesta lets face it, as this reflects the premium badge and high-quality interior especially that you will get here.

However, the A1 has excellent residual values and can also hold its value much better than most small cars in this class do.

So overall, this strong resale value is crucial as it helps you to make monthly PCP costs surprisingly competitive, as the car's guaranteed future value tends to be higher.

Maintenance & Warranties

New, Audi provided a standard three-year/60,000-mile warranty. This was complemented by a comprehensive 12-year bodywork warranty against rust perforation and a three-year breakdown cover and roadside recovery service.

Servicing costs at an Audi main dealer are higher than for non-premium brands. However, for cars over three years old, Audi offers fixed-price servicing plans, which can then make your maintenance more predictable and affordable here.

This is all while your reliability is generally considered a strong point, thanks to the use of proven parts from the wider VW Group.

This is all while the build quality is also classed as excellent as well.
